The Commission for Social Development (CSocD) will convene its sixty-fourth session from 2 to 10 February 2026 at United Nations Headquarters in New York in Conference Room 4, bringing together Member States, United Nations entities, civil society, and other stakeholders to advance global dialogue and action on inclusive and sustainable social development.
As the United Nations’ primary intergovernmental body for social development, the Commission plays a central role in following up on the World Summit for Social Development, the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The sixty-fourth session will continue this mandate, with a strong focus on translating global commitments into coordinated, equitable and inclusive policies.
Priority theme
The priority theme for CSocD64 is: “Advancing social development and social justice through coordinated, equitable and inclusive policies.”
Under this theme, the Commission will consider policy options and recommendations aimed at strengthening social justice, reducing inequalities, and promoting inclusive development pathways that place people at the centre of development efforts. Discussions will be informed by the report of the Secretary-General and will contribute to the Commission’s advisory role to the Economic and Social Council.
Follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development
In line with its mandate under General Assembly resolution 55/46, the Commission will assess progress in the implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action, while also examining linkages with the outcomes of the Second World Summit for Social Development and broader efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This includes consideration of the social dimensions of development and the interlinkages across economic, social and environmental policies.
Review of the situation of social groups
The session will include an in-depth review of relevant United Nations plans and programmes of action concerning the situation of key social groups, including:
Persons with disabilities
Youth
Older persons
Families
These discussions will build on existing international frameworks, such as the World Programme of Action for Youth and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (2002), and will highlight good practices, gaps, and emerging policy priorities.
Emerging issues
An important focus of CSocD64 will be the discussion on emerging issues, under the theme: “Eradicating poverty and ensuring dignity through resilient care and support systems.”
This segment will explore how care and support systems can contribute to poverty eradication, social protection, and human dignity, particularly in the context of demographic change, crises, and growing inequalities. A panel discussion will facilitate exchanges among policymakers, experts, and stakeholders on innovative and resilient approaches.
High-level and multi-stakeholder engagement
The programme of work includes a ministerial forum, high-level panels, interactive dialogues with senior United Nations officials, and a multi-stakeholder forum focused on scaling up good practices at the local level to end poverty, create jobs, and build inclusive societies. These formats are designed to promote exchange, partnership-building, and concrete action.
Outcomes
The Commission is expected to conclude its session with agreed outcomes, including action-oriented proposals and recommendations to the Economic and Social Council. The session will also adopt the provisional agenda for its sixty-fifth session and the report of the Commission on its sixty-fourth session.
