II Conferencia Nacional de Empleo y Trabajo Decente
The II National Conference on Employment and Decent Work (II CNTED), to be held in Brazil in 2025, can play an important role in building inputs for the 2nd World Summit for Social Development. Following a stakeholder participation roadmap involving government, workers, employers and civil society at local, regional and national levels, the II CNTED will serve as a space for national mobilisation to identify and articulate employment and decent work policies aligned with the realities and expectations of the population. Its results, as guidelines for the generation of quality jobs, the strengthening of social protection and the fight against inequalities in the labour market, can feed into the WSSD2 discussions, aligning with the event's objectives of involving multiple actors in the formulation and implementation of effective social policies. Furthermore, the recommendations of the II CNTED can be shared in international fora, contributing to the global commitment to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthen stakeholder participation in building a more inclusive social agenda.
On the sidelines of the 51st Session of the Arab Labour Conference, convened by the Arab Labour Organization (ALO) in Cairo, the ILO and the ALO hosted a discussion on WSSD2 that brought together over 100 government, employer and worker representatives from the Arab region, including the Ministers of Labour of Qatar, Lebanon, Tunisia, the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Yemen. The discussion, held under the patronage of the State of Qatar and in collaboration with the Executive Bureau of Councils of the Ministers of Labor and Ministers of Social Affairs in the countries of cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Gulf, aimed to ensure that the Arab region plays a strong and substantive role in shaping the global social development agenda. The session focused on Arab States’s contribution to shaping a new global social contract grounded in social justice.
The Conference was organized by the Ministry of National Territory and Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy of the Government of Morocco, UN-Habitat, GLTN and the Arab Land Initiative, in partnership with the League of Arab States, UNESCWA, UNECA, the World Bank, BMZ, the Netherlands’ RVO, and Morocco land sector stakeholders. Adequate Housing for All is an increasingly prominent concern in peace and security with housing, land and property rights and the destruction of civilian infrastructure being major features in recent conflicts especially in the Arab region. Land disputes and scarcity, as well as insecurity of tenure, are important indicators of inequality and drive conflicts between communities and groups in several contexts. Secure housing, land and property rights are an essential component of peace processes and post-conflict stabilisation. To ensure integration of land issues in the intergovernmental preparatory processes leading up to the Second World Summit on Social Development, UN-Habitat collaborates closely with the Kingdom of Morocco, as the host of the conference, and H.E. Mr. Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations, as the appointed cofacilitators.
