Third session of the Conference of States Parties (1-3 September 2010, UNHQ New York)

Information Note on the Third session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the General Assembly in its resolution 61/106 of 13 December 2006. Article 40 of the Convention stipulates that “The States Parties shall meet regularly in a Conference of States Parties in order to consider any matter with regard to the implementation of the present Convention.”

The third session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held  on September 1, 2010 from 9.45 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. On September 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. On September 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

This session, under the theme; "Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities through the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, began with the election of members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and include substantive roundtable discussions and an interactive informal session with civil society. 

Elections of the members of the Committee was held in accordance with article 34 of the Convention. As the total number of ratifications has passed 80, the membership of the Committee increased by six to a total of 18 members. Additional elections was held for the six members whose term expires in 2010.  Please note that the upcoming election of the members of the Committee was coordinated and administered by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Office of Legal Affairs.
