First United Nations Decade for the eradication of poverty (1997-2006)

In its resolution resolution 50/107, the General Assembly proclaimed the First United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (1997-2006). In December 1996, the General Assembly declared the theme for the Decade as a whole to be "Eradicating poverty is an ethical, social, political and economic imperative of humankind."

Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2008-2017)

In its resolution resolution 63/230, the General Assembly proclaimed the Second UN Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2008-2017) under the theme “Full employment and decent work for all”. The resolution called for a more coherent and integrated UN system-wide response.In December 2007, the General Assembly proclaimed the Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2008-2017) reiterating that eradicating poverty was the greatest global challenge facing the world and a core requirement for sustainable development, especially for developing countries. The proclamation recalls the outcomes of the World Summit for Social Development and the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly.

Third United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2018-2027)

In its resolution 72/233, the General Assembly proclaimed the Third United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2018–2027). It also considered that the theme of the Third Decade, to be reviewed at its seventy-third sessions, should be “Accelerating global actions for a world without poverty”, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The core of the present report consists of an inter-agency, system-wide plan of action for poverty eradication to coordinate the efforts of the United Nations system, as well as recommendations concerning how to make the Third Decade effective.
