The United Nations at 80: Building our future together

This year, we celebrate the UN’s 80th anniversary.

The most universal international organization, the United Nations, is truly global in reach. By promoting peace, human rights and social progress, the United Nations has improved the lives of millions of people around the world, setting higher standards of living for all.

Still, eighty years since its inception, the United Nations is facing new challenges, working on new ways to adapt and strengthen itself from the inside out. Within the 2030 Agenda, the Pact for the Future, and the UN80 initiative, the UN hopes to revitalize the commitments it's made towards international cooperation and to ensure that it can deliver for people everywhere, no matter the circumstances.

On 24 October, we celebrate United Nations Day, marking the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came to life.

No other international organization shares the same level of legitimacy, convening power, and impact that the United Nations has. The United Nations’ ability to give people hope for a better future is invaluable. Today, the urgency for all countries to come together to keep the nations united has never been greater.

UN Day gives us the chance to amplify our voices and reaffirm the purposes of the UN Charter that have guided us for the past 80 years.
