Newly elected members to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

On 8 July, at the 27th plenary meeting of the ECOSOC: Integration Segment 2019, the Council elected eight members to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues nominated by Indigenous peoples’ organizations for a 3-year term beginning 1 January 2020. They are:

Mr. Geoffrey Scott Roth (USA)

Mr. Freddy Condo Riveros (Bolivia)

Mr. Dario Jose Mejia Montalvo (Colombia)

Mr. Aleksei Tsykarev (Russian Federation)

Ms. Hannah McGlade (Australia)


At the 12th plenary meeting of ECOSOC, held on 7 May, the Council elected seven government-nominated members to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues for a 3-year term beginning 1 January 2020. They are:

Ms. Zhang Xiaoan* (China)

Mr. Grigory E. Lukiyantsev (Russian Federation)

Ms. Lourdes Tibán Guala* (Ecuador)

Ms. Irma Pineda Santiago (Mexico)

Ms. Tove Søvndahl Gant (Denmark)

Mr. Sven-Erik Soosaar** (Estonia)

The term of office of the new members of the Permanent Forum begins on 1 January 2020 and expires on 31 December 2022.


Pursuant to resolution 2000/22 and decision 2016/205, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) established the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues as a subsidiary organ of the Council. The Forum consists of 16 members, serving in their personal capacity as independent experts on Indigenous issues for a period of three years, with the possibility of re-election or reappointment for one further period. Eight members are nominated by Governments and elected by the Council according to a specified pattern set out in decision 2016/205, and eight members are appointed by the President of the Council following formal consultation with the Bureau and regional groups through their coordinators on the basis of broad consultations with Indigenous organizations.
