The report of the 22nd session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (2023) was presented by the Chair of the Forum to the Economic and Social Council Management Segment Meeting on 25 July 2023.

Dario Mejia Montalvo, Chair of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, introduced the body’s report on its twenty-second session (document E/2023/43-E/C.19/2023/7), held from 17 to 28 April 2023. The report contains analyses, recommendations and initiatives on the realities of Indigenous Peoples under the session’s theme “Indigenous Peoples, human health, planetary and territorial health and climate change: a rights-based approach”.
The Forum welcomed and endorsed general recommendation No. 39 on the rights of Indigenous women and girls of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, recognizing the important role of Indigenous women and girls in the preservation of their peoples, lands, territories, natural resources, and culture. The Chair encouraged Member States to support the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, and the corresponding Global Action Plan, in all the possible ways, and urged Member States and UN entities to separate Indigenous Peoples from local communities.
The Council adopted draft decisions on: “Venue and dates for the twenty-third session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues”; holding an international expert group meeting on the theme: “Indigenous Peoples in a greening economy”; and the provisional agenda for its twenty-third session, including the theme: “Enhancing Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination in the context of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: emphasizing the voices of Indigenous youth”.
