Inter- agency Technical Meeting
14-15 November 2011, Rome
The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) organized an Inter-Agency Technical Meeting on Broadening Coherence and Collaboration for Rural Development through Employment and Decent Work from 14 to 15 November 2011 in Rome, Italy. The Inter-agency meeting was intended as a continuation and a follow up of the Inter-agency technical meeting on “Building employment and decent work into sustainable recovery and development – the UN contribution” held in Turin in November 2010. The Inter-agency meeting aimed at establishing a broad coherence and collaboration to set “Unleashing of rural development through employment and decent work” as a core element of national and international development strategies.
The Social Impact of the Economic Crisis

The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) organized a Panel Discussion on "The Social Impact of the Economic Crisis". The meeting took place on 18 October 2011 in New York at the Economic and Social Council Chamber (NLB).
Challenge of Building Employment for a Sustainable Recovery
23-24 June, Geneva, Switzerland
The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) organized, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), an Expert Group Meeting on “The Challenge of Building Employment for a Sustainable Recovery”. The meeting took place on 23-24 June in Geneva, Switzerland and brought together specialists to undertake a review of responses to the global jobs crisis in different countries and regions of the world and will consider concrete policies and strategies to create productive, decent employment during the recovery.
Poverty Eradication
20-22 June 2011, Geneva, Switzerland
The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in close collaboration with the International Labour Organization (IL0) organized a high-level Expert Group Meeting on “Poverty Eradication” from 20-22 June 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the preparations for the 50th session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD), which is scheduled to take place in New York in February 2012.
The meeting was convened in the context of ECOSOC resolution 2010/L.5 in which the Economic and Social Council decided that the priority theme for the 2011-2012 review and policy cycle of the Commission should be “Poverty Eradication, taking into account its relationship to social integration and full employment and decent work for all.” The outcomes of the meeting provided important inputs to the work of the Commission, in particular contributing to formulation of policies that have been shown to have a major impact on efforts to reduce poverty.
Confronting Family Poverty and Social Exclusion

DSPD Focal Point on Family organized an Expert Group Meeting on Assessing family policies: Confronting family poverty and social exclusion & ensuring work-family balance, from 1 to 3 June 2011 in New York. The meeting was convened as part of preparations for the twentieth anniversary of the International Year of the Family, 2014.
Cooperatives in Social Development: Beyond 2012
3-6 May 2011, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
The United Nations Division for Social Policy and Development in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in collaboration with the Government of Mongolia, hosted an Expert Group Meeting on "Cooperatives in Social Development" on 3-6 May 2011 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The meeting was organized around four key themes: (1) Promoting research on cooperatives; 2) Identifying and Promoting Good Practices and Addressing Challenges faced by cooperatives; (3) Raising Public Awareness on cooperatives; and (4) Policy and Planning Beyond 2012.
In addressing these themes, the EGM sougth to 1) highlight the strengths of cooperative enterprises in promoting social development; 2) identify important factors and practices important for the successful operation of cooperatives; 3) identify and assess ways and means to raise awareness about cooperatives;4) understand the current state and gaps in research and information in support of policy formulation for cooperative development; 5) review prevailing policies and laws impacting cooperatives and identify strategies to create supportive policy environments for cooperatives; and 6) identify priority capacity-building strategies to promote and strengthen cooperatives.
Quantitative Indicators for the WPAY

The meeting was convened in the context of General Assembly resolution 65/312, in which the General Assembly adopted the outcome document of their High-level Meeting on Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding, held on 25-26 July 2011. The outcome document enumerated several requests to the Secretary-General, one of which was to propose a set of possible indicators for the World Programme of Action for Youth and the proposed goals and targets, in order to assist Member States in assessing the situation of youth.
The Meeting proposed a set of 34 core indicators and 15 supplementary indicators under the following priority areas of the WPAY: education, employment, poverty and hunger, health, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, globalization, information and communication technologies, HIV/AIDS. The proposed indicators are included in the report of the meeting.

This expert group meeting aimed to put forward draft guidelines, a set of criteria, for Member States to consider when developing national monitoring and evaluation frameworks for the World Programme of Action for Youth.
