Combatting Violence against Indigenous Women and Girls

This meeting was attended by international indigenous experts whose findings are to be submitted to the Eleventh Session of the Permanent Forum in May 2012. This Expert Group Meeting has been organized following a recommendation of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), approved by ECOSOC decision 2011/266, which authorized a three-day international expert group meeting on the theme "Combating violence against indigenous women and girls: article 22 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples" and requested that the results of the meeting be reported to the Permanent Forum at its Eleventh Session, to the General Assembly at its Sixty-seventh Session and to the Commission on the Status of Women at its Fifty-sixth Session in 2012.

Human Rights of Older Persons

OHCHR and UNDESA convened a three-day Expert Meeting on the human rights of older persons in New York, 29 to 31 May 2012, to precede the third working session of the open-ended working group. Open to member States and other stakeholders as observers, the meeting aims at informing the debate from a substantive human rights perspective by addressing urgent and relevant gaps in the respect, protection and fulfillment of human rights of older persons.
Harnessing the Cooperative Advantage to Build a Better World
4-6 September 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The Expert Group Meeting on "Harnessing the Cooperative Advantage to Build a Better World" was successfully held on 4-6 September 2012 at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting was an opportunity for the exchange of ideas with and among experts on the cooperative enterprise model and development.
The outcome of the meeting would serve to inform the intergovernmental processes at the United Nations, providing expert opinions in the formulation of the International Plan of Action on Cooperatives, a proposed outcome of the International Year of Cooperatives, as well as input to the Report of Secretary General to the 68th Session of the General Assembly in 2013.
Promoting Empowerment of People

DSPD organized a high-level expert group meeting on “Promoting people’s empowerment in achieving poverty eradication, social integration and full employment and decent work for all” from 10-12 September 2012, in New York, USA as part of preparations for the 51st session of the Commission for Social Development, which is scheduled to take place in New York in February 2013.
The meeting is convened in the context of draft Resolution 1 in the Report of the Commission for Social Development (E/2012/26) in which the Economic and Social Council decided that the priority theme for the 2013-2014 review and policy cycle should be “Promoting empowerment of people in achieving poverty eradication, social integration and full employment and decent work for all”. The outcomes of the meeting will provide important inputs to the work of the Commission, in particular contributing to the formulation of policies that have been shown to have a major impact on efforts to promote people’s empowerment.
Green Growth and Green Jobs for Youth

DSPD, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific of the International Labour Organization and the United Nations Environment Program are organizing jointly an expert group meeting on “Green Growth and Green Jobs for Youth” from 12-13 December 2012, at ESCAP headquarters in Bangkok as part of the implementation of the UN system-wide Plan of action of the Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2008-2017). Promoting green jobs for young people is an important component of the Plan of action.
