Chair of the Permanent Forum On Indigenous Issues Presents Report of the 23rd Session to the Economic And Social Council

The report of the 23rd session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (2024) was presented by the Chair of the Forum to the Economic and Social Council Management Segment Meeting on 23 July 2024.

Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Chair of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, introduced the body’s report on its twenty-third session (document E/2024/43 | E/C.19/2024/8), held from 15 to 26 April 2024.  The report contains analyses, recommendations and initiatives on the realities of Indigenous Peoples under the session’s theme “Enhancing Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination in the context of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: emphasizing the voices of Indigenous youth”. 

The Forum acknowledged the key role of Indigenous youth as champions for self-determination, and called on Member States to redouble efforts to fully realize the right of self-determination of Indigenous Peoples by ensuring that they remain at the center of all decision-making processes that affect their Peoples, their lands, territories, and resources. The Forum also urged Member States to enhance direct financial support for Indigenous Peoples’ projects with funding mechanisms that are equitable, accessible, flexible and aligned with Indigenous Peoples’ priorities.

The Council adopted draft decisions on: “Venue and dates for the twenty-fourth session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues”; holding an international expert group meeting on the theme: “The rights of Indigenous Peoples, including those in voluntary isolation and initial contact in the context of the extraction of critical minerals and the provisional agenda for its twenty-fourth session, including the theme: “Implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within UN Member States and the UN system, including identifying good practices and addressing challenges”.
