On 5 July 2025, the international community will celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives (CoopsDay) under the theme: “Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World.”
This year’s theme highlights the cooperative movement’s unique ability to respond to some of today’s most pressing global challenges — from rising inequality and environmental degradation to job insecurity and food systems resilience. By placing people and planet over profit, cooperatives offer concrete, community-driven solutions that support inclusive development and long-term sustainability.
Cooperative Values in Action
Across sectors and regions, cooperatives continue to:
Empower local communities through democratic participation and shared ownership;
Promote economic and social inclusion by supporting decent work and reducing inequality;
Advance climate and environmental goals by prioritizing sustainable practices in agriculture, energy, and housing;
Foster resilience through solidarity and innovation in times of crisis.
With over one billion cooperative members worldwide, the movement is demonstrating that alternative business models can lead to equitable and sustainable progress — leaving no one behind.
A Global Call for Collaboration
Since 1995, CoopsDay has been observed by the United Nations and the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) as an opportunity to raise awareness of cooperatives and their contributions to development. The 2025 observance comes at a critical time, as the world prepares for the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar (4–6 November 2025). As we strive for a more inclusive and sustainable future, cooperatives are essential partners in shaping forward-looking policies and solutions.
