The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs is organizing an Inter-agency Expert Group Meeting on “Employment and decent work for poverty eradication, in support of the Second UN Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2008 – 2017)” under the theme “Full employment and decent work for all” and the inter-agency Plan of Action for the decade from 4 - 6 May 2016, in Bangkok, Thailand, as part of the preparations for the 71st session of the UN General Assembly.

The Inter-agency Expert Group Meeting will evaluate progress made over the past decade to eradicate poverty through employment creation. Specifically, the meeting will examine the contributions of the UN system to implementing the objectives of the Second Decade. The meeting will seek to answer key questions such as:

  • What happened in terms of impact on poverty and employment levels; what actions were put in place at the national, regional and global levels to promote the implementation of the objectives of the Second Decade;
  • How do we measure success or the lack of thereof;
  • What kind of policies should be promoted at the national, regional and global levels to address the unfinished business of the Second Decade and the Millennium Development Goals; and
  • How can the Second Decade contribute to progress in realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?
