Webinar on the intersection of vulnerability and COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean

21 August 2020

Understanding poverty reduction involves a basic fact: changes in poverty are the net result of inflows and outflows of people into and out of such condition. Poverty and its multidimensionality cannot be properly addressed without delving into the opposing concepts of vulnerability and economic security.

Mr. Luis Felipe López Calva ASG and UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean

Mr. López-Calva will discuss the concept of middle class from the perspective of economic security: those who are not vulnerable to falling back into poverty in the presence of shocks. Using evidence from Latin America and the Caribbean, he will also show how the COVID-19 crisis is interacting with vulnerability in the region to severely impact the wellbeing of large segments of the population for years to come.

Mr. López-Calva is the UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean since September 2018. He has nearly 30 years of professional experience, advising several Mexican governments, in addition to UNDP and most recently the World Bank where he most recently served as Practice Manager of the Poverty and Equity Global Practice (Europe and Central Asia). He was the co-director and lead author of the World Development Report 2017 on “Governance and the Law”. He was previously Lead Economist and Regional Poverty Advisor in the Bank’s Europe and Central Asia Region, and Lead Economist at the Poverty, Equity and Gender Unit in the Latin America and Caribbean PREM Directorate, also at the World Bank.
