Webinar on “The Strugglers: Insecurity in the 21st Century”, 23 July 2020

17 July 2020

The Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) of UN DESA organized an online webinar on “The strugglers: insecurity in the 21st Century”, on 23 July from 10:00am to 11:00am (EDT).

Dr. Nancy Birdsall discussed the plight of the “strugglers”; the billions of economically insecure people who live above the poverty line but far from the more secure middle class. She also discussed how countries can pay greater attention to the needs of the strugglers in the design and implementation of social and economic policies, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Birdsall is president emeritus and a senior fellow at the Center for Global Development, a policy-oriented research institution based in Washington, DC. Prior to launching the Center, Birdsall served for three years as senior associate and director of the Economic Reform Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. From 1993 to 1998, Birdsall was executive vice-president of the Inter-American Development Bank. Her work focuses on issues of globalization, poverty and inequality, as well as on the reform of the international financial institutions. Birdsall holds a PhD in economics from Yale University and an MA in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies
