Toolkit on Sport for Development and Peace (SDP)

Players from the Single Leg Amputee Sports Club Sierra Leone (SLASC) face off in a match in Freetown, attended by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Founded in 2001 following Sierra Leone’s ten-year civil conflict, the SLASC offers trauma recovery for war amputees.

Capacity development and technical cooperation are mandated work areas within the Division for Inclusive Social Development of UN DESA. The UN toolkit on sport, development and peace (SDP) is one of the outputs that will contribute to enhancing capacity amongst Member States and civil society organizations to formulate effective policies that focus on the intersection of sport and sustainable development.

The UN Toolkit on SDP consists of eight training modules:

1. Introduction to the toolkit
2. Sport, development and peace policies and programmes
3. Skills training, volunteerism, employability and mentorship
4. Physical education, physical activity and sport
5. Safeguarding, integrity and human rights
6. Values, social inclusion and role modelling
7. Awareness, advocacy and social media
8. Monitoring and evaluation of policies and programs

Toolkit on Disability for Africa

English Version | Version Française

A Toolkit on Disability for Africa has been developed by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD). It is designed for the African context and aims to:

  • Provide practical tools on various disability-related issues to government officials, members of parliament, civil and public servants at all levels, disabled persons organizations (DPOs) and all those with an interest in the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society and development;
  • Support the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and disability-inclusive development;
  • Offer examples of good practices from many countries in the African region.

The Toolkit is particularly timely and appropriate given that 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention and the first year of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. It is comprised of 14 modules focused on various topics of socio-economic development related to disability issues in Africa.
