Working Group on Disability and Digital Societies

The aim of the Working Group on Disability and Digital Societies is to explore how digital information can empower persons with disabilities and contribute to disability-inclusive development. This groups acts as a platform to share ideas on how the digital society can contribute to: (i) better monitoring and evaluation of disability inclusive development; and (ii) the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for persons with disabilities. The Group was co-founded by the Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Data-Pop Alliance.

Side event at the 9th Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
How Can Digital Societies Contribute To Achieving the SDGs for Persons with Disabilities
The Working Group on Disability and Digital Societies organized a side event at the 9th Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, 8:00am - 9:30am. The event, titled "How Can Digital Societies Contribute To Achieving the SDGs for Persons with Disabilities," explored how new forms of digital information, such as social media or crowdsourced information, could contribute with relevant evidence about the situations of persons with disabilities and contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for persons with disabilities. Experts highlighted case studies of digital information and their potential to empower persons with disabilities. At the event, the group presented a draft of a new White Paper, "How Can Digital Information Contribute to Achieving the SDGs for Persons with Disabilities?" (see link below). Organizers for the Side Event included World Health Organization (WHO), Data-Pop Alliance, AXSMap, the Nippon Foundation, Disabled People's International (DPI) and the Institute on Disability and Public Policy at American University.
