The United Nations will commemorate the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on Wednesday, 3 December 2025, with a global virtual event at the UN Headquarters in New York, from 10 to 11:30am (EST) under the theme Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”

This year’s observance takes place shortly after the Second World Summit for Social Development, where world leaders adopted the Doha Political Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to building just, equitable, and inclusive societies. The Day provides an opportunity to translate these commitments into action by placing persons with disabilities at the centre of social development efforts.

Despite progress in many areas, persons with disabilities in all regions continue to face widespread barriers to education, employment, social protection, and participation in public life. Many remain at higher risk of poverty, experience disproportionate economic hardship, and encounter systemic discrimination that limits equal opportunities.

The 2025 IDPD will highlight how disability inclusion is essential to achieving poverty eradication, full and productive employment and decent work for all, and genuine social integration. It will also underscore the importance of accessible public services, equal rights, community-based support systems, and meaningful participation in decision-making.

The official UN commemoration at will include:

Opening Segment

Senior UN leaders and partners will reflect on the significance of this year’s theme and on how global commitments—such as those outlined in the Doha Political Declaration—can help advance disability-inclusive development across all sectors.

High-Level Panel Discussion

A diverse panel of experts, advocates, youth representatives, and practitioners will discuss practical ways to strengthen disability inclusion, including:

- Expanding access to inclusive education and employment
- Strengthening social protection systems
- Improving accessibility across physical, digital, and social environments
- Ensuring equal opportunities for participation and leadership
- Advancing awareness-raising efforts to combat stigma and discrimination
- Promoting accessible and affordable assistive technology

Panellists will share promising initiatives, innovative solutions, and policy approaches that demonstrate how inclusion can drive broader social progress.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities serves as a reminder that sustainable development cannot be achieved without the full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities. The 2025 commemoration will inspire renewed global action to advance equality, dignity, and opportunity for all.
