The inaugural United Nations Games, held from 11 April to 8 May 2024 in New York, marked a significant milestone in the promotion of sports diplomacy. Initiated by Turkmenistan and co-organized by Australia, India, Kazakhstan, Qatar, and El Salvador, the Games were held in celebration of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
With over 300 athletes from 85 countries and 18 organizations participating, the event featured eight sports: football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, pickleball, running, chess, and yoga. The competition brought together diplomats, UN staff, and members of specialized agencies, fostering unity, trust, and well-being among UN representatives.
The Games underscored the UN’s commitment to cooperation, fairness, and social inclusion through sport. The event was fully funded through voluntary contributions, reflecting the dedication of the international community to strengthening peace through sporting initiatives.
With its resounding success, the UN Games are set to become an annual event, with the next edition scheduled for April 2025 in New York.
