Sport and physical activity contribute to improved physical and mental health, and overall better well-being, among which can be the practice of yoga. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit language and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

In recognition of its benefits, the General Assembly adopted resolution resolution 69/131, declaring 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, to raise awareness on its holistic benefits. Resolution 69/131,  recognizes that yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being, and notes the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.
