This Manifesto was the outcome of the Regional Workshop on Inclusive Education, organized by the African Disability Forum in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), in October 2022. The Manifesto results from these constructive exchanges and sets their intentions to join efforts and advocate for increased commitments to ensure that persons with disabilities fulfil their right to education, with no discrimination and on equal basis as others.
Millions of children with disabilities remain excluded from education across African countries, with more and more children being left behind due to increasing conflicts and crises. Barriers to education persist within and outside of the education system, including inaccessible infrastructures, non-adapted materials and curricula, lack of teachers’ training and support, persisting stigma and discrimination towards persons with disabilities, lack of assistive technologies and devices, violence and lack of security, and poverty of the households.
The video is based on interviews with four representatives of the Organisations of Persons with Disabilities who participated in the Regional Workshop and elaborated this Manifesto. They illustrate the key issues and matters of concern, what their commitments are, and what leaders should do to ensure the inclusion of children with disabilities in education.
