China has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the protection and promotion of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities with a $10,000 contribution to the UN Voluntary Fund on Disability (UNVF). Presenting the check on Friday 12 August, Counsellor Yao Shaojun from the permanent mission of China to the United Nations said the annual contribution reaffirms China’s commitment to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which the country ratified in 2008.

In China, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF), based in Beijing, represents the interests and safeguards the rights of persons with disabilities in China. The organisation provides comprehensive services to disabled persons and, as commissioned by the central government, supervises the administration of disability-related affairs. The UNVF is used for innovative projects implemented through civil society organisations and partnerships that work towards achieving the development goals and objectives of the CRPD.

While encouraging other countries to contribute to the Voluntary Fund, Counsellor Yao also expressed the hope that China’s contribution will increase in years to come. Civil society organisations and Member States are encouraged to learn more about the UNVF and how they can contribute to this program.
