Cooperative Rural Development Project benefits Cuba's agriculture

Because of its highly educated and skilled labour force, Cuba's target in terms of food security was not hard to reach by modernizing its economy. The project Cooperative Rural Development Project in the Oriental Region otherwise known as PRODECOR was funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and was created to help Cuba achieve its agricultural goals. PRODECOR was a means for the cooperatives of Cuba to be funded.

The project was able to fund agricultural cooperatives in Cuba with machinery and resources to improve their economy. It covers 18 municipalities in four provinces in Cuba's Oriental region and will directly benefit over 13,000 farming families all of whom are members of the 157 cooperatives in Cuba.

Cuba has had a long history of cooperatives organizations. About 80% of the food produced is grown by cooperatives which represents the amount of agricultural gain that they bring to the country.
