Cooperatives build momentum behind renewable energy in Croatia

Energy cooperatives are a tool that can promote the use of renewable energy while also bringing communities together around a more sustainable approach to jobs and growth. The project "Setting up Renewable Energy in Cooperatives in Croatia" in one year established ten pilot energy cooperatives and popularized a concept of collective action for Croatians.

The goals of the project were to raise awareness and to create conditions that enabled cooperatives to flourish. In addition to setting up the cooperatives, this project hosted 15 seminars on cooperatives across Croatia. These seminars helped local communities to familiarize themselves with the concept of energy cooperatives and the cooperative model in general.

Hands on support to these energy cooperatives was also a big component of the project. Cooperatives around the world organized a global fund raising program to finance the efforts made in Croatia. Croatian energy cooperatives are now on the way to being as competitive and functioning as cooperatives in Denmark, Germany, and Spain, which set the standard for European Union member states.
