Engaging Youth in Civic Life

The UN DESA Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) is set to release the 2016 United Nations World Youth Report on Civic Engagement on World Youth Skills Day which takes place this year on Friday, July 15th. The launch of the report will be celebrated with an event held at UN Headquarters in New York on July 15th at 1:15 pm, EST that will bring together experts, young people and Member State representatives for a dialogue session on how to better enable youth engagement.

The launch event will feature Kristin Duquette, US Paralympian; Erhardt Graeff, Researcher at MIT’s Centre for Civic Media; and Ross Perlin, author of the book Intern Nation. The panelists will speak about the report and discuss what best practices need to be implemented to reinvigorate youth engagement in civic life.

The World Youth Report on Youth Civic Engagement explores young people's participation in economic, political and community life, responding to growing interest in, and an increased policy focus on, youth civic engagement in recent years among governments, young people and researchers. What are the current trends in youth civic engagement that lend to problems? How do we tackle youth engagement on a global scale? These issues and others on revitalising civic life among young people will be discussed in the upcoming report.

The Report provides thematic insights on economic, political and community engagement, coupled with expert opinion pieces so as to provide robust and varied perspectives into youth engagement. In offering fresh perspectives and innovative ideas on youth engagement, the Report is intended to serve as an impetus and tool for dialogue, policy discussion and action between youth and government.

To attend the event in person, registration is available here. You can also watch the event live through the UN WebTV broadcast, available here. Follow the discussion on social media with the hashtag #worldyouthreport and download a summary of the upcoming report here.
