Family Business for Sustainable Development Goals

7th February 2024, UN Headquarters in New York, CSocD62 Side Event organized by China Great Wall Society and Shaanxi Patriotic Volunteer Association.

The participants included the representatives from Permanent Mission of Indonesia, Nigeria, and other guests from Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Nigeria, Kenya, etc.

Following the agenda, we invited the distinguished guests respectively to deliver their speech with the theme.

Firstly, Mr. Ignacio Socías is the Director of Communication and International Relations of International Federation of Family Development (IFFD). Background with the year for 30th Anniversary of International Family Year, Speaking from the perspective of an agency that helps with families in general, Mr. Socías highlighted the important role families play in achieving the SDGs through describing the research procedure IFFC had conducted on family policies and SDGs. His presentation drove home the point that since family policies are a mainstay of national public policies and the most meaningful vehicle for governments to influence the standard of living of future generations, more research is needed to effectively integrate families into achieving the global ambitions of the SDGs.

Secondly, Mr. Michael Jizhar is the Executive Vice President and the third generation of family business owner MODENA, an Indonesia based global consumer electronics company. He highlighted how MODENA, as a leader in family enterprises, has pursued the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in both their internal operation and the consumer-facing businesses. Specifically, he emphasized on the six major initiatives the company has always adhered to, namely Clean Energy, Clean Water, Sustainable Packaging, Electronic Recycling, Waste Management, and Equal Presentation. The detailed examples supported by statistics firmly showed MODENA’s resolute dedication to driving sustainability within the industry through the impactful narrative, “Sustaining Legacies: The MODENA Journey.”

Thirdly, Dr. Rebecca Finlason-Harper is the Founder of Family Civility Institute. She highlighted the agricultural family business that supported 13 SDGs. And she emphasized that peace is a necessary precondition for trade, sustained economic growth and prosperity. Without SDGs16, Justice and Strong Institutions, SDGs3, Good health and well-being and SDGs10, Reduced Inequalities, How can a family business sustain economic growth? Just like a successful family business can contribute to SDGs, the establishment of the goals can contribute to the family business being successful and sustainable.

Fourthly, Mr. Junzhan WANG is also President of Beijing Hehe Zongheng International Culture Co., Ltd. He highlighted the Chinese Family Business and their Sustainable Development Practices. Background with the Chinese traditional cultural Context, he introduced the history and the advantages of the family business in China. The flexibility and discretion, long-term orientation and succession planning are the characteristics of Chinese family business. Social responsibility is also a part of legacy building. Most important is that Family is a core logic of business sustainable development in China.

After That, during the question and answer session, the participants also have interactive communication with the speakers.
