Focusing on people: striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet

The 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, opens on 12 September under the presidency of Miroslav Lajčák of Slovakia, and the theme “Focusing on people: striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet”.

Items on the provisional agenda  of the 72nd session include global governance and migration; sustainable development and climate change; human rights and human dignity; modernizing the United Nations and strengthening the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

Overview of what to expect:

11 September – Closing of 71st session
12 September – Opening of 72nd session
13 September – Meeting of the General Committee to consider the provisional agenda and the supplementary list and to make recommendations to the General Assembly.
18 September – High-level meeting  on the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse: building momentum for change. This is an event convened by the Secretary-General.
19  to 25 September – General Debate
26 September – High-level meeting convened by the President of the General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
27 to 28 September – High-level meeting  on the appraisal of the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons.
