Fostering sustainable and resilient societies in uncertain times

The world is facing multiple crises, from the lingering effects of COVID-19 to rising conflicts, natural disasters and the accelerating impacts of climate change. These challenges have been exacerbated by increased inequalities, pollution and biodiversity loss, which disproportionately impacts women, girls and marginalized populations. To address these challenges, investing in social protection systems, adaptation and resilience are essential to help countries tackle current and future risks.

By prioritizing resilience, countries can build a more stable environment that attracts sustainable investments and supports long-term economic growth. Furthermore, strengthening early warning systems, disaster risk reduction and preparedness, combined with a gender-responsive approach to social protection, can further foster prosperity and help communities adapt to crises. Properly designed and financed social protection systems are important in advancing gender equality, eradicating poverty with an economic and social transformation.

As the world prepares for the fourth International Conference on Financing for Development and the second World Summit for Social Development to be held in 2025, the Joint Meeting of the Economic and Social Council and the Second Committee on 15 October 2024 will explore pathways to foster more sustainable, resilient and shock-resistant societies in these uncertain times, drawing on the Secretary-General’s report, The World Survey on the Role of Women in Development.

The outcome of the joint meeting will be a joint informal summary by the President of ECOSOC and Chair of the Second Committee highlighting the key messages, ideas and innovative policies emanating from the discussions.
