The International Labour Organization and International Co-operative Alliance conducted an online survey that resulted in 75% of survey respondents saying that women's participation in co-operatives has increased over the past 20 years. The evidence proved the point that the cooperative model provides women a dignified way out of poverty, away from violence and abuse.
The findings from the survey also showed a high number of women in leadership positions, particularly in finance and insurance cooperatives. Going along with these findings, 80% of survey respondents felt that cooperatives are better than other types of public or private sector in advancing gender equality.
Cooperatives have historically been known for contributing to equality and economic and social empowerment.
