Global wholesale markets and UN agriculture team pair up to feed cities

Because the population in cities is growing rapidly, there is now an increasing amount of people suffering from poverty and undernourishment in urban areas. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Union of Wholesale Markets have teamed up to feed city dwellers that go without food. By making a partnership with more efficient wholesale markets, people struggling will have healthier food options and a means to obtain it.

To maximize the aid of wholesale markets, the FAO is analyzing the food that is wasted through the wholesale process and how to reduce this waste. The partnership of these two organizations set a goal to reduce the food waste by 1.3 billion tonnes every year; this will provide plenty of extra food to the growing populations in cities.  With better practices in the design and efficiency of food distribution, wholesale markets can cut back on waste and provide fresher food to urban areas.
