In the margins of COSP16, the Permanent Mission of Italy co-hosted two high-level side events aimed at promoting accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
The first event, titled "Ensuring Accessibility and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities in Health and Support Services: Italy's DAMA (Disabled Advanced Medical Assistance) and Other Good Practices," was co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Austria to the UN, the European Disability Forum, and Inclusion International. This gathering brought together representatives from Member States, UN bodies, civil society and private sector, united in their efforts to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. During the event, whose concluding remarks were pronounces by the SG Special Envoy, expert panelists emphasized the importance of accessible and easy-to-understand communication on healthcare infrastructure that caters to the needs of all individuals, including those with disabilities. They shared commendable practices that highlighted the potential of creating inclusive environments where no one is excluded, illustrating the significant benefits this brings to the entire community. It is crucial to ensure that healthcare and support services are accessible to all individuals, irrespective of their disabilities, in order to be more representative of a diverse world.

The second side event, co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Cuba and Argentina to the UN, UN DESA/DISD, and Progetto Filippide, delved into specific aspects of disability, providing another inspiring moment. Titled "Living Independently: The Network Model for Persons with Autism in Adulthood," this meeting shed light on the importance of communication, sports and recreational activities in creating inclusive and dynamic spaces for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The need to establish ‘un progetto di vita’ for people with disabilities was recalled: a comprehensive project that supports and empowers people affected by any kind of disability at every stage of life and in any environment to gain effective independence.
