The International Labour Organization (ILO) supports companies in India to adopt workplace HIV/AIDS programmes that benefit workers and their families and communities. Companies in India have become committed to non-discrimination based on HIV. Specially trained people are also available to give counseling and support in addition to medical check ups. These workers teach HIV positive members of the community that a person living with HIV can lead a normal life taking the right precautions.
In the last ten years, companies have become a lot more knowledgeable about how to approach the topic of HIV/AIDS. These companies in India now put policies in place for the company to be more enlightened with the need to deal with HIV positive people in a non-discriminatory manner. The ILO has helped to draft the workplace policy on HIV and AIDS, and train employees as master trainers that will help create awareness about HIV and AIDS within their communities.
Because of the work done by the ILO, India has achieved an overall reduction of 57 percent in estimated annual new HIV infections (among the adult population) during the past decade from 274,000 in 2000 to 116,000 in 2011.
