How co-ops can keep leading the way

The second debate at Co-operative Congress was centered around how co-operatives can be leaders in terms of sustainability. One of the main principles of co-operatives is to be focused on increasing the common good instead of increasing profits which is something that more businesses need to focus on. To make this goal achievable, it will be expensive.

One of the issues discussed in the debate was making more co-operatives fossil free. In order to afford measures like this to make the enterprises more environmentally friendly, co-operatives need to come together at a global level. Designing fossil free co-operatives from the start would be an innovative way to make co-operatives leaders in sustainable practices.

A proposal that was brought up in the debate afford these goals was a strategy for co-ops to become acknowledged leaders in sustainability by 2020. To do this, the youth has to be involved in the co-operative enterprises to strengthen the environment. The conference concluded with discussing ways in which young people could get involved and learn about the co-operative business model.
