Factories operating and the number of workers employed by them are increasing in Cambodia according to the International Labour Organization's (ILO) new Bulletin on Cambodia's garment and footwear sector. This sector currently employs 600,000 workers whose wages have increased over the past two years. Minimum wage is a huge topic of Cambodia, so these changes were of vital importance.
Factories that are opening in the sector are causing the minimum wage to increase globally. This ILO Bulletin reviews the performance and progress of Cambodia's garment and footwear sector using up to date data and focusing on exports, wages, employment, factory openings and closures and newly approved foreign direct investment.
The ILO developed this Bulletin to start a global conversation about minimum wages. It provides an informed start for a conversation about negotiations on wages and other social and economic issues in the garment and footwear industry.
