International Widows' Day

23 June is observed as International Widows' Day as a day to remember the injustice that women can face when they are faced with the death of their partner. This can affect their living conditions immensely especially in areas of conflict, natural disaster, and humanitarian crisis.

Women often suffer discrimination and factors such as age, income, and ethnicity can add to this discrimination. Widows are a group of women that are particularly vulnerable and are often overlooked because many of them are older and do not work outside of their home.

Many societies view women as a whole only when they are married, so this leaves widows to suffer from exclusion, abuse, and loss of social standing. International Widows' Day presents an opportunity for communities to raise awareness and end the discrimination that widows suffer in these societies and reassert the equality of men and women.
