Italy at COSP18: Championing Inclusion and Participation for All

Italy at COSP18

Through a series of impactful side events held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Italy reaffirmed its strong commitment to innovative practices and promoted the importance of investing in each person's potential. From musical performances to thoughtful discussions on recreation and participatory living, these events highlighted the essential role of culture, social engagement, and International cooperation in cultivating inclusive societies.

1. Italy's first side event, held on 9 June 2025, featured an inspiring performance by the talented young musicians of the "Si può fare band". Their music moved the audience and served as a powerful expression of inclusion through the arts. With this initiative, Italy aimed to showcase the talents and skills of every individual and highlight the importance of providing opportunities and investing in each person's potential.

2. The second side event promoted by Italy, "Recreational Time, Life Time", was co-sponsored by Japan, Tunisia, South Africa, and International Disability Alliance (IDA), focused on recognizing leisure and social activities as fundamental aspects of a meaningful life. It offered an important platform to reaffirm the value of recreational time not only as enjoyment but as a right tied to inclusion and we'll-being.

"I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the associations and social cooperatives that shared their unique daily experiences to highlight the talents of every individual”, stated Italian Minister Alessandra Locatelli.

3. The third side event organized by Italy, ""The Right to a Full and Participatory Life", was an interactive workshop that brought together institutional representatives, organizations of persons with disabilities, social cooperatives, and international experts. Co-sponsored by the Democratic Republic of Congo and attended by representatives from Saudi Arabia, the event emphasized the right to participation beyond work and care - highlighting the importance of culture, sports, and social interaction in everyday life. The right to active engagement, socialization, and access to cultural and recreational activities is fundamental to building truly inclusive pathways.

“I would like to thank the Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Irene Esambo Diata, for her contribution, and all the organizations that shared experiences and practices that can inspire new actions in Italy and around the world. A full and participatory life is a right for everyone”, affirmed Minister Alessandra Locatelli.
