The world community needs to focus greater attention on the excluded and marginalized members of the human family, the United Nations Secretary-General has said.
The UN estimates that globally more than 900 million people continue to live in extreme poverty - Daniel Dickinson reports.
In a statement to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Saturday, the UN chief, Ban Ki-moon, said the world had made extraordinary progress in reducing extreme poverty.
Over the past 25 years, more than one billion people have been lifted above the poverty threshold, but 900 million still live below. Mr Ban warned that climate change, violent conflict and other disasters threaten to undo progress.
He added that in adopting the new Sustainable Development Goals in September, world leaders made a time-bound commitment to end poverty in all its forms, everywhere.
