Ms. Sabina Alkire directs the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), a research centre within the Department of International Development, University of Oxford. Her research interests and publications include multidimensional poverty measurement and analysis, welfare economics, Amartya Sen’s capability approach, the measurement of freedoms, and human development. She holds a DPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford.
Established in 2007, the centre aims to build and advance a more systematic methodological and economic framework for reducing multidimensional poverty, grounded in people’s experiences and values. OPHI’s team members are involved in a wide range of activities and collaborations around the world, including survey design and testing, quantitative and qualitative data collection, training and mentoring, and advising policy makers.
Ms. Alkire talks about the status of poverty in the world right now, how we can properly measure the affects of poverty, and how UNDESA DSPD's work contributes to the eradication of poverty.
