16 UN Member States have pledged approximately US$ 77 million to go towards UN development work for 2016, with US$10 million destined for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Member states that announced pledges at the Conference were: Singapore, Kuwait, Turkey, Russia, Luxembourg, Estonia, Mongolia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Samoa and Djibouti. In addition, Switzerland and Vietnam have multi-year agreements with UNDP until 2017.
Nick Hartmann, Director of UNDP’s Partnership Group, speaking at the Conference on behalf of UNDP Administrator Helen Clark, welcomed the announcements of funding for the organization’s ‘regular’ or ‘core’ resources, referring to non-earmarked funding that can be used for UNDP to develop quality results, respond effectively to crises and support the high standards of efficiency, quality assurance and transparency that UNDP has attained.
To deliver that, adequate and predictable resources are required. Without core resources, UNDP cannot effectively implement its Strategic Plan and maximize the best value from other forms of financing and achieve development results.
