The lack of electricity around the world is "a massive problem" which puts people's lives at risk, according to a report launched at the UN in New York.
The Poor People’s Energy Outlook Report says 4.3 million people die each year as a result of indoor air pollution caused by open-fire cooking.
Half of child deaths under five are caused by fumes from dirty cooking fuels.
Simon Trace, from the United Kingdom-based non-governmental organization, Practical Action, says although there has been progress in providing electricity to millions of people, more still needs to be done. "We are dealing with a massive problem here in terms of access to energy globally. 1. 2 billion people in the world have no access to electricity at all and probably another billion have very poor access to it. 2.7 billion are still cooking over open fires."
