Preventing child trafficking after Nepal earthquake

Since the first earthquake hit Nepal about two months ago, at least 245 children have been intercepted from being trafficked and unnecessarily or illegally placed in children's care homes. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is working to reduce the risk of trafficking through policy measures and targeted action plans.

Trafficking was already a problem in Nepal before the earthquakes, and after disasters there is always a risk that it will increase. Sending children to orphanages is another growing trend in Nepal that increases the risk of these children being trafficked. Parents send their children to orphanages thinking that will guarrentee their child safety and education when the reality is they become at risk for poorly-regulated adoption, exploitation, and abuse.

UNICEF is working closely with Nepal's Government and other partners to accelerate the response and awareness on child trafficking prevention.
