Safeguarding the Future: Mitigating Aggression’s Impact on the Future of Children and Youth in Palestine for Inclusive Social and Economic Development

7th February 2024, United Nations Headquarters New York, CSocD62 Side Event organized by the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum and the Department of Women and Youth Empowerment Division of the Islamic Development Bank. Distinguished speakers, including Taha Ayhan, President of the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum, the Permanent Observer of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Deputy Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Tareq M A M Albanai, Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations, Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, and Yavuz Salim Kiran, Deputy Minister of Family and Social Services, Turkey, shared valuable insights during the event.

The focus of the discussions centered on the complex issues of aggression, deprivation, social injustice, and extreme poverty, all posing significant threats to the future of the Palestinian nation. Moving beyond immediate social and economic concerns, the event generated recommendations that spanned a spectrum of broader dimensions. Speakers highlighted the importance of global cooperation in advocating for human rights-based social protection systems in Palestine. They underscored the necessity for international collaboration and support to promptly implement these systems, crucial for safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable people.  

Key recommendations stress the need for tailored strategies to address challenges facing vulnerable children and youth in Palestine. Emphasizing holistic solutions for immediate and long-term needs, they call for a deep understanding of complex regional dynamics. Participants urged equal access to essential services for Palestinian children and youth under occupation, encompassing healthcare, education, technology, housing, and food. This addresses immediate needs and fosters sustainable development.  

The event stressed the imperative for international collaboration to deliver prompt humanitarian aid and support recovery, emphasizing coordinated efforts to mobilize resources for urgent needs. Recommendations included revisiting the legal framework for children and youth under occupation, advocating for a legal approach through international courts for systemic issues, ensuring justice and accountability. Immediate ceasefire through political and diplomatic channels was urged. Political dialogue was highlighted for resolving the longstanding conflict, setting the stage for diplomatic negotiations addressing root causes. Compensations for rebuilding Palestine were proposed, emphasizing financial support for devastated infrastructure and communities. Enhanced cooperation among member states was encouraged to apply international law and human rights, along with urgent legal and humanitarian measures in Gaza.
