The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Development Law Organization, and the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations co-organized the “SDG 16 High-Level Conference 2024 – Peace, justice and inclusive societies for sustainable development” on Monday, May 6, 2024, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The High-Level Conference came at a time when peace, justice, and inclusive, effective, and accountable institutions were more needed than ever, and served as a high-level platform to assess and promote SDG 16 as a key enabler of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and all the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Conference assessed progress and challenges related to SDG 16, fostered the sharing of experiences and insights, and helped identify good practices that could accelerate implementation. It highlighted the catalytic effect that progress on SDG 16 could have on achieving sustainable development and addressing the intersecting crises facing the world.

The Conference brought together representatives of Governments, international organizations, civil society, academia, and youth. The President of the Republic of Italy and the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN participated in the opening session. The detailed program and full list of speakers were available on the Conference web page.

The outcomes of the Conference supported the review of SDG 16 at the 2024 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development. They also informed the process towards the Summit of the Future in September 2024.

Participation in person was open to UN grounds-pass holders. The Conference was held in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. It was also streamed live on UN Web TV: 10:30 am – 1:00 pm EDT; 3:00 – 6:00 pm EDT.
