Sport for SDGs: Together we can all make a difference

Sport has proven to be a cost-effective and flexible tool in promoting peace and development objectives. Since the inception of the MDGs in 2000, sport has played a vital role in enhancing each of the eight goals, a fact which has been recognized in numerous Resolutions of the General Assembly. In the Declaration of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sport’s role for social progress is further acknowledged:

"Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognize the growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives."

Driven by this milestone recognition and based on the past success of Sport for Development and Peace activities and programmes across multiple sectors, sport will continue to advance global development assisting in the work towards, and the realization of, the SDGs. The United Nations envisages sport to do so as an important and powerful tool with the potential to tackle challenges entailed in each of the 17 SDGs.

Estoril Praia is the first Portuguese sports club to commit to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They have introduced measures within the club to help eradicate hunger and poverty, combat inequalities, promote gender equality and much more.

The club drafted their own 20 SDG measures, which aim to increase the participation of women in sports, triple the number of women on its management team, and invest in sports that do not impact the environment.

To commemorate this important event, Estoril Praia created a special t-shirt that players will wear at tournaments, showing their support for the SDGs.

The initiative of Estoril Praia has the support of the Portuguese Office at the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC). It’s a good example of how civil society can help make the difference towards achieving the SDG goals. TOGETHER we can all make the difference towards a better world.

Sport for Development and PeaceOn the occasion of the 2018 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on 6 April, the Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) is launching an online campaign to celebrate the growing contribution of sport to development and peace through the promotion of tolerance, respect, empowerment of women and youth, health, education and social inclusion.

The online campaign #PlayforGlobalGoals seeks to encourage individuals and organizations who support or carry out sport for development and peace activities to participate in the commemoration of the International Day. Specifically, it invites individuals and organizations to share a picture on social media that represents for them the “power of sport to promote peace, unity and social inclusion”.
