In an important moment for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal agenda, the United Nations and China jointly issued a commemorative stamp sheet dedicated to persons with disabilities. Issued on 27 September 2015, the stamp sheet, produced by the Department of Social and Economic Affairs (DESA), the UN Postal Administration and China Disabled Persons' Federation, brings particular focus to Goal 10, which aims to reduce inequality within and among countries. China is home to 85 million persons with disabilities, and there are an estimated 1 billion persons with disabilities worldwide.
Peng Liyuan, spouse of Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled the stamps with Yoo Soon-taek, wife of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. "It is a responsibility of the entire society to guarantee equality, respect and care for every handicapped person, and we need to work together to help them realize their dreams and lead a decent, colorful and successful life," said Peng. The First Lady’s presence indicates China’s high level of engagement on disability issues on both a national and international level.
Also in attendance were Mr. Wu Hongbo, Under Secretary General DESA, and Ms Daniela Bas, Director of DESA’s Division for Social Policy and Development, which functions as the focal point on disability issues within the UN.
