This first side event of the 11th session of the UN Open-ended working group on ageing was opened by Ms Masumi Ono (UNDESA) and had the first UN Global report on ageism at its core, with Dr Vânia de la Fuente-Núñez (WHO) presenting its key findings and sharing the tools that have developed as part of the Global campaign to combat ageism to help everyone create #AWorld4AllAges.
This presentation was followed by an interactive panel discussion moderated by Mr Rio Hada (OHCHR), where Ms Edilia Camargo from Panama, Mr Bruno Ibarria from Chile and Dr Barbro Westerholm from Sweden not only shared their own lived experiences of ageism but also the progress that has been made in their countries or regions in addressing ageism, particularly through the adoption of national or regional laws, thereby demonstrating, in line with the findings of the Global report on ageism, the important role of policy and law in any effort to address ageism against any age group.
