The United Nations in 1969 committed itself to strengthening the Organization's relationship with the world's young people. In July of 1970, the first international youth convocation was held in the UN headquarters in New York called the World Youth Assembly. These young people used the UN platform to discuss global issues that were important to them including education, peace, development, and the environment.
The 1970 convocation was such a success that the Assembly adopted a resolution that requested the Secretary-General to consult Governments and specialized agencies on the possibility of holding more youth assemblies because of the knowledge gained during the World Youth Assembly.
The United Nations reaches its 70th anniversary this week and keeping youth involved is still a priority. Young people need to be given the chance to engage in the decisions that will shape their future.
