Inequality is a social, economic and political challenge and has profound impact on sustainable development. It features prominently in the recently adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, resulting in the creation of a stand-alone goal (SDG-10: Reduce Inequality within and among Countries) and a commitment to leave no one behind by sustainable development progress.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) Special Meeting on Inequality will:

  • Analyze key drivers of inequality and put forward policy solutions to tackle it
  • Bring together leading experts on inequality from academia, government, the private sector, the UN system and other stakeholders to conceptualize, analyze and recommend solutions for inequalities in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

His Excellency Oh Joon, President of the UN ECOSOC will convene this one-day meeting on 30 March 2016, in the ECOSOC Chamber at UN Headquarters in New York. It will feature interactive panels with high-level representatives from Member States, the UN system, academia and civil society and provide a forum for discussions on the global challenge of rising inequalities.
