World day brings to light the topic of elderly abuse

June 15 is named by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as World Elder Abuse Awareness day to raise awareness of the taboo subject of violence and abuse against the elderly. Society often overlooks this abuse in the world.

By 2050, older persons are expected to make up more than 20 percent of the global population, so these rights are imperative to be discussed now.

Making June 15 World Elder Abuse Awareness day is a way for the UN General Assembly to shed light on the issue and initiate a global discussion on it.

Mr. Ban said that for many, elder abuse “conjures an image of a heartless caregiver who is not well-known to the victim. While this deplorable problem does persist, more often it is family members who perpetrate the violations, which include neglect as well as psychological, financial and physical abuse.”
