The World Water Day 2023 campaign, called Be the change, encourages people to take action in their own lives to change the way they use, consume and manage water.
The promises made by individuals on the campaign website will contribute to the Water Action Agenda - a main outcome of the UN 2023 Water Conference, which opens on World Water Day, 22 March 2023.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has tweeted his support for the campaign, saying, “The world is woefully off-course to achieve our goal of water & sanitation for all by 2030. Billions of people still don’t have safe water & toilets. We can all do something to accelerate change.” As an individual or on behalf of an organization, take action today!
There are other ways to get involved this World Water Day:
- Get animated
Check out the World Water Day animation that features the symbol of the campaign - the hummingbird. All the issues are summarized in under two minutes - a perfect chance for you to learn about the campaign and a fun thing to share with your networks or kick off a meeting or event.
- Help create a global ‘bouquet’ of hummingbirds
Did you know a group of hummingbirds can be called a bouquet, shimmer or charm? The World Water Day campaign is asking schoolchildren to create origami hummingbirds, with their promises to take water action folded inside. Please ask your local school, or other community group, to take part with these guidelines.
- Hold your own World Water Day event or create free merchandise
The campaign ‘Activation kit’ contains assets to help you promote World Water Day through social media and events. And there are design files available for you to make free merchandise. Download your materials here.
- Take simple #WaterActions
A range of resources, created by the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs, includes the The Lazy Person’s Guide to Saving Water, a toolkit that offers step-by-step guidance and materials on how to move beyond individual action to organizing a “Be the Change” week or one-day event, and a fun test to challenge your water knowledge.
