The fifty-fifth session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD55) took place in conference room 4, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 1 to 10 February 2017. The priority theme for the 2017-2018 review and policy cycle is “Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all”.
Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world were invited to attend the CSocD55.
Report of the session
The CSocD55 stressed that the international community must bolster current commitments to eradicate poverty in all its forms and must fully implement the 2030 Agenda in its entirety to ensure that no one was left behind. It noted that the 2030 Agenda was inextricably linked to the rights of women, young people, older persons, indigenous people, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. Those groups continued to disproportionately face major obstacles to their development, while people living in extreme poverty lacked the political power and equal opportunities to take charge of their destiny. Hence, human dignity must be at the centre of any sustainable development process. Read the full report:
